RSPB Scotland - Mill dam nature reserve

Mill Dam is one of Orkney’s important remaining wetlands. This natural marsh was dammed in the 1880s, providing an ideal habitat for birds throughout the year. In summer, you'll see large numbers of breeding wildfowl, including pintails, redshanks and wigeons, while in winter migrating whooper swans and other birds visit

The Broch of Burroughston

In the north-east of Shapinsay you will find a well-preserved Iron Age broch. This is an impressive round building (18m in diameter) with 4m thick drystone walls. The surviving walls of the broch rise to about 3m and it is accessible to visitors, but is in a semi-wild state!

E-Bikes

The island of Shapinsay now has Electric bikes for hire. They are capable of doing everything a normal bike can do and more. The adult e-bikes will assist you up to 15.5 mph and any speed past that point will be up to your leg power alone. You can explore Shapinsay in a fraction of the time, without the same strain on your legs! 2 children under the age of 6 can also travel in the "cargo bike" which has a nifty trailer on the back.
